 Community Of Inquiry (COI) Framework
 Community Of Inquiry (COI) Framework

 Community Of Inquiry (COI) Framework

The Community of Inquiry theoretical framework provides collaborative and constructive learning depending on the three elements of the framework which are cognitive ,teaching and social presence. They are like one engine ;that means they can not stand alone. Each one of them completes with one another.

Cognitive Presence

Cognitive presence is the student's ability to construct knowledge  and understanding individually and collectively . That means it allows the students to control over their knowledge development . Cognitive presence is what makes learning process take place .It is consisted of four components.

  • The first one is triggering events. It is when the teacher starts the lesson by giving situation. It has the sense of puzzlement such as brainstorming, critical thinking
  • The second is exploration .The students exchange information and ideas  with each other .For example, the students can construct his ideas depending on his classmates'ideas.
  • The Third is integration .The students try to integrate these separated ideas and merge them to form a full idea.
  • The Fourth is resolution. The students try to apply the ideas they learnt.

Teaching Presence

Teaching presence is the teacher's ability to set curriculum and organize the course. It affects  both cognitive presence and social presence. It is consisted of three elements .
Teaching function is for both teachers and students in a CoI.It means that it is not the responsibility of the teacher but it is also the responsibility of the student .

  • The first is instructional management .The teacher gives clear instruction to the student to start the discussion.Furthermore,he defines the content.
  • The second is Building understanding. The teacher tries to make sure that the students understand and grasp the lesson well by sharing personal meaning.
  • The third is direct instruction. The teacher give direct instruction and explanation  focusing on the discussion.

 Social Presence
Social  presence  is affected by teaching presence because the teacher establishes the climate which allows  the student to feel safe , communicate naturally ,and have opportunity  to express themselves .There are three components of social presence .

  • First is emotional expression. The students express their emotion whether it is negative or positive.
  • Second is open communication .There must be risk-free expression.
  • Third is group cohesion. The teacher has to encourage collaboration between students to help each other to understand the content .He must create an environment between students  which supports group cohesion .

7 Blended Learning Structures in Education

There are seven blended learning structures in Education. The teacher has to know that each model does not fit all classes .He must choose the model which fits students'needs,or he will waste all time. The most important factor is the teacher who can not be replaced.

1) Blended Face-to-Face Class

Blended face to face class is considered so close to traditional way  because it requires classroom.Furthermore, the teacher uses face to face lesson most of the class,so class presence is more required in this model.High value instructional time is shared by the teacher and students. That means the teacher gives online instruction to the students to engage and supplement in-class lessons. In this model, class time is used for discussions and group projects. For example,if you have a student who has a problem with specific lesson, you give him a class time question on it .Then, you have to share session code with other students to work on this question together. At the end of the class ,the student will be able to master this lesson he has problem with.

2)Blended Online Class

This is considered the opposite of blended face to face class model. In this model, the study is fully online. For example ,the students study from remote  places;they take instruction and do their assignment online. One of the best platforms for that is Coursera which can provide fully online courses ,and you can do assignments online .On the other hand,it requires some in person activities.

3) Flipped Classroom

4) Rotational Model

5)The Self-Blend Model

If a student wants to study specific course which is not provided in the school or the university , he can take this course online.Furthermore,if he is interested in very  specific field or subject ,he can take many online courses in this field to be advanced in it.Some describe this model as a la cart approach of blended learning.

6)The Blended MOOC

Mooc is an abbreviation for massive open online course. Blended Mooc is used to merge traditional face to face way and online learning to improve learning process. It is considered a form of flipped classroom in which the students watch video at home ,come to class and do group activities. In this model , students can access the material from any institutes they want if they are openly accessible. Then they came to the class to discuss it . MOOC 's content and activities must be part of the targeted course.

7) Flexible-Mode courses

The teacher 's instruction is given in person and online. The atudents is free to choose how to tale the course. For example, if the teacher gives phonetics course  in class, he may make video and provide the material online. Therefore the students is free to choose whether he attends in class or takes it online.
